The word taweez (تعویذ) comes from the Arabic root 'a-w-dh — the same root as a'ūdhu billāh, "I seek refuge in Allah". A taweez is, at its heart, a written form of seeking refuge in Allah: verses of the Qur'an, names of Allah or known duas, written down and kept with a person.
What a taweez should contain
Scholars who allow the taweez set clear conditions:
- Only Qur'an, the names and attributes of Allah, or known duas.
- In understandable words — no unknown symbols, secret names or words whose meaning is not known.
- The belief that benefit and harm are from Allah alone — the taweez is a means, like medicine, not a power in itself.
- Treated with respect, since it contains the Qur'an.
What a taweez must never contain
- Calls to anyone other than Allah — jinn, saints or "spirits".
- Anything used to harm others: to separate spouses, to "bind" someone, or to control them. This is sihr, and it is haram.
- Promises that it will guarantee an outcome.
Why scholars differ
The Prophet ﷺ warned against tamā'im — amulets that people in the time of ignorance hung on themselves believing the object itself protected them. Some scholars understand this warning to include every hung amulet, even one with Qur'an in it, so they discourage the taweez altogether and prefer reciting the Qur'an and duas directly.
Other scholars — including many of the Hanafi and South Asian scholarly tradition — hold that the warning refers to amulets of shirk and unknown words, and that writing Qur'an and duas is permissible under the conditions above. They cite, for example, that Abdullah ibn 'Amr (ra) used to write the dua of protection for his young children who could not yet recite it themselves.

Both sides agree on the most important point: reciting the Qur'an and the masnun duas yourself is the best protection, and trust must be in Allah alone.
